Preview Day 9 – Women – Pool B
Germany v Japan
> This will be the first ever encounter between Germany and Japan at the Olympics. > At the last two Champions Trophy tournaments Germany beat Japan 2-1 (in 2008) and 1-0 (in 2007). > Germany will progress to the Semi-finals if they beat Japan. A draw will also give them a good chance to reach the last four. > Germany have reached the semi-finals twice before (1992 and 2004). On each occasion they went on to play the gold medal match. > If Japan win, they will play the Final 7-8. If they lose they qualify for the Final 9-10.
Great Britain v USA
> Great Britain have played the United States twice before at the Olympics. > At Atlanta 1996, Great Britain won 1-0. At Seoul 1988 the match ended 2-2. > Angela Loy and Keli Smith have now scored three goals each at this tournament making them the leading goal scorers in the US team. > Angela Loy has scored in two successive matches at Beijing 2008. > GB are ranked third in Pool B trailing Germany by two points and Argentina by one point.
Argentina v New Zealand
> Argentina have beaten New Zealand twice at the Olympics. > At Athens 2004 Argentina beat the Kiwi's 3-0, through goals by Luciana Aymar, Vanina Oneto and Agustina Soledad Garcia. > At Sydney 2000, Argentina recorded their biggest win at the Olympics beating New Zealand 7-1. > The Kiwi's are still chasing their first point at Beijing 2008, having lost their first four matches. > New Zealand will take on either Korea or South Africa in the Final 11-12 on Friday, 22 August. > Luciana Aymar has scored in each of the last three Olympics: 2000 (3), 2004 (4) and 2008 (1).
