MAIN FEATURE

Fire on the water
Acclaiming each of the 14 new world records, the flames shooting over the Susie O’Neill pool at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne flashed the swimming world into a different realm. There may have been 171 nations competing but there was no doubt about supremacy, the USA leading the charge with 11 men’s victories and sealing their domination with nine golds in the women’s events.  Their global superstar Michael Phelps won seven gold medals, the most won by any one swimmer at a single meet, and set four individual world records, and perhaps he should now be regarded as one of the true sporting greats, on a similar pedestal to such as golfer Tiger Woods and tennis star Roger Federer.
