What was the target group?
Youth (male and female), parents, youth trainers, the media and beginners.

How many people took part?
A total of 200 youth, 20 youth trainers and volunteers, 4 GHA Executive members including the Chairman and a number of parents

 

What was the aim of the event?

  • To demonstrate that hockey is a sport for all that can be played by everyone on any surface
  • To attract people who have not played hockey before
  • To collaborate with the media to intensify the popularization of the sport in Ghana
  • To demystify the view or perception that hockey is an expensive sport played on well laid surfaces

Future targets/plans?

 

  • Continue to partner media in popularizing the sport
  • Intensify the playing of the game on available surfaces in the communities; strengthen the links with the Beach Sports Association to include the sport in their activities

TV and media coverage?

 

  • National Television Station, Ghana Television covered the event and featured it as a major news item and as part of its flagship sports magazine programme ’Sports Highlights’.
  • The widest circulating newspaper in Ghana, “The Daily Graphic”, the sports-dedicated “Graphic Sports” and their sister paper that targets the youth, “Junior Graphic”, featured the event, before and after the celebration
  • The 2006 Best National Radio Station for Sports, Happy FM, featured the event through the week
  • The internet news site Ghanaweb (www.ghanaweb.com) featured the event prominently
