Korea swept to the top of their group ahead of Germany on goal difference when Lee Jung Seon cracked in five goals and Song Seung Tae notched a hat-trick in a crushing 11-0 victory over Egypt.
After taking a 3-0 lead at half time, the hapless Africa Champions could hardly have imagined the onslaught they would face after the turnaround as Korea turned on the pressure scoring goals almost at will. In a devastating eight minute spell at the end Korea piled in five goals including three successive strikes from Song.
In the other pool, a last gasp penalty corner goal by New Zealand's ace Hayden Shaw steered the Kiwis to a dramatic 2-1 victory over India. In a contraversial finish to the match, the tall defender slotted home the winner from the side's third penalty corner in over time.
New Zealand took the lead early in the second half but roared on by a huge crowd, India responded to mount a series of attacks. Deepak Thakur created the best opportunity when he made a superb break down the right and burst in to the circle before unleashing a thunderous shot which hit the post, but minutes later veteran Dhanraj Pillay levelled.
In a frenzied last quarter as both teams searched for the winner, New Zealand maintained their composure in the attacking circle as India's defence fell in to disarray.
Assem Gad (Egypt coach)
"I don't know what happened today - they played like a school team not a national side. Our spirit was destroyed and I think they need a psychologist. Today they forgot about hockey.
Jeon Jae Hong (Korea coach)
"I set them a target of scoring between 10 and 14 goals today.
Lee (no 11) is a good goal scorer and as this will be Song's last tournament, Lee will replace him as the star player.
" I am confident we can play against Germany and reach the semi finals and we will prepare thoroughly.
I support the decision to suspend Yeo Woon Kong. I always tell my team to play within the rules and he let me down. I expect him to play a more mature game against Germany."
Hayden Shaw (New Zealand)
"Never been involved in a game quite like that! I've learnt my lesson after missing two last minutes chances in previous matches - I really wanted it and I got it."
Simon Towns (New Zealand captain)
"We usually lose in the last minute but we did it today. It's great to win on my 200th appearance, really magic. I was really pleased with our performance in the heat and I thought we finished stronger than they did."
On South Africa next up - "They fight really hard and are always very competitive. There's never much in it but when we play well we're a better side than they are."
