Netherlands Thrash Germany
18 Aug 2004 10:26

  HOLLAND 4  GERMANY  1

Holland gave Crown Prince Willem-Alexander plenty to cheer about when they went on a first half goal blitz to thrash their great rivals Germany. Two first half field goals and two penalty corner strikes put the game beyond Germany's reach and although they responded well after the interval and pulled a goal back, there was never any chance the European champions would relinquish their control.

Fanny Rinne (Germany midfielder):"We started so badly and I can't explain why. We were nervous but it's not all over and we still have two games to try and reach the semi finals. All we can do is look ahead to our game against South Africa."

Fatima Moreira de Melo (Dutch forward):"It wasn't easy and we're all exhausted. We won it in the first half because we took our chances but we struggled to keep up the intensity after the break. Our game plan of keeping the pressure on the ball and then attacking at speed worked really well."
