World champions Argentina opened their Olympic campaign in style when they cruised to a 4-0 win against Spain.
After racing in to a three goal lead at half time it looked as though Argentina would increase the pressure and pile in the goals after the break but Spain defended doggedly to prevent their opponents from adding to the scoreline.
Spain defender Barbara Malda said:
"We know how strong Argentina are but after conceding three goals it was very difficult. We did have some opportunities at penalty corners but failed to convert them. We play China next and have to pick ourselves and get a result to regain our confidence."
Soledad Garcia, the Argentina striker said she was delighted with her goal adding:
"We really wanted to play better but at least we have three points. Our aim is to win a medal here but we'll have to improve. We played a good first half but we can still get a lot better."
