Germany Stuns Australia
14 Aug 2004 17:55

Germany stunned the reigning Olympic champions, Australia, when they became the first team to beat the Hockeyroos in Olympic competition since 1992 with a well deserved 2-1 win.

But the Germans, who led 2-0 at the break following a bright first half display, were forced to withstand a fierce second half onslaught by Australia who fought back to make it 2-1 and finished much the stronger of the teams.

Katrina Powell (Australia captain):
"We're very disappointed but it's only day one.It was a good second half and we had chances to win it but it was a really tough game to start with. We only woke up in the second half and just couldn't back in to it."

Heike Laetzsch (Germany striker):
"We always knew we had to keep playing to go further ahead because Australia always come back at you. When we were 2-0 ahead, we tried to make it 3-0. I'm so happy because we so rarely beat Australia in major tournaments."

Franziska Gude (Germany midfielder):
"I guess it was an unexpected result but when you look over the whole match we had the better chances. We played with a lot of emotion and commitment - every player was working for each other."
